Odds to win the AFC east division: -550
The New England Patriots have won the last eight straight division titles and there is nothing that appears to be preventing the Brady/Belichick machine from doing it again. Quarterback Tom Brady shows no signs of his recent 40th birthday. In 17 seasons in Foxborough, Belichick has guided the Patriots to 14 division titles, 11 conference championship games including the last six straight, and five Super Bowl victories. The addition of WR Brandin Cooks in the offseason makes the Patriots offense that much better. A healthy Rob Gronkowski will be back at tight end and RB James White and WR Julian Edelman return. The defense is much improved under coordinator Matt Patricia, who is likely the NFL’s next new head coach someday soon. The Patriots do face Denver, Oakland, and Pittsburgh on the road but have home games with Atlanta, Houston, Kansas City, and Carolina.
Odds to win the AFC east division: +1200
The Miami Dolphins 2017 campaign took a serious turn when QB Ryan Tannehill went down with an injury during training camp. The sixth-year veteran was hurt in a non-contact drill and it has yet to be determined whether or not Tannehill needs surgery. The Dolphins quarterback was injured last year and missed the final four games of the season. He suffered a partially torn ACL but elected not to have surgery. Tannehill re-injured the knee in camp and is likely out for either the first half of the season or the entire year. With their quarterback out, the Dolphins chances of getting back to the postseason diminish greatly.
Odds to win the AFC east division: +1200
The Jets all but mortgaged their 2017 season letting veterans like Nick Mangold, David Harris, Eric Decker, and Brandon Marshall leave. Head coach Todd Bowles must choose a starting quarterback from Josh McNown, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg. The Jets will feature one of the younger lineups in the league and are looking forward to just getting 2017 over with so the franchise can start the rebuilding process next year when they can draft a franchise quarterback.
Odds to win the AFC east division: +800
In Buffalo, the Bills will be trying to make the postseason for the first time in 17 seasons. It is the longest playoff drought in major professional sports. New head coach Sean McDermott will build an offense around running back LeSean McCoy. Tyrod Taylor remains at quarterback and the Bills will be decent on defense, but anything better than 8-8 is a longshot. The AFC East is New England’s for the taking.
