NFL Pro Bowl Weekend 2012 Preview in Honolulu, Hi.
(Last updated: January 28th, 2012)
As a football gambler you are probably going through withdrawals this weekend. This is the first weekend since late August that there is not a full slate of college and professional football games to bet on. There is only one football game on planet earth this weekend that you can get some action on and this game is the NFC-AFC Pro Bowl which will be on Sunday January 29th.
The game will take place in Honolulu, HI, and the game can be seen live on NBC starting at 7pm EST.
Betting on a game like the Pro Bowl can be very difficult. It can be challenging from the stand point that no one knows the motivation of these players involved. Are they just there on vacation and oh yeah have to play a game? Or do they take pride in their conference winning bragging rights?

Putting that factor to the side which is impossible to predict, just like any analysis from any game you bet on all here we think there are certain trends and matchups that could put the smart money on one side in this game.
Treat your preparation for betting on this game just like any other.
First, you would check the weather conditions, right? Well the weather will not be an issue because the game is in Paradise.
Next, injuries or anyone not playing in general would be of particular concern to you as a bettor. In this game that factor in particular is huge and is made even more significant by the fact that the participants in the Super Bowl do not take part in the Pro Bowl. So there will be 8 players from the Patriots including Tom Brady, Wes Welker, and Rob Gronkowski who will not be eligible to play along with 8 other voted in members of the AFC squad who have declined the invitation for one reason or another.
That is a 16 player shift in the roster for the AFC. For the NFC there were only 2 Giants picked for the squad in Eli Manning and defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. Other than the two Giants only two other players who were selected that will miss the game are Carlos Rogers and Dashon Goldson of the 49ers who both withdrew because of injury. This gives a significant edge in roster strength to the NFC.
The last factor I look at when betting on the Pro Bowl is chemistry. Due to the fact that these teams are basically thrown together last minute and have basically only a couple days of “practice” any chemistry they have from being on the same team sticks out even more. This metric clearly swings to the NFC in a big way.
Two of the QB’s for the NFC, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers will have 5 and 6 other members of their team participating in the game respectively. Another bonus is that Rodgers’ coach, Mike McCarthy, along with the rest of his staff will lead the NFC squad.
Most of the Vegas and offshore sportsbooks have the NFC installed as 3 to 4.5 favorites depending on where you look. Based upon my analysis I think the NFC favored up to 6 points is a pretty good bet considering the factors I laid out above. One other little tidbit, stay away from the over/under!
These games have violent swings, shoddy play, and explosive moments which will completely ruin the game for you if you touch the over/under. Take the NFC straight up with the points and you will be happy you did.
Although it is too early to make a pick on the real game taking place next week in Indianapolis, Super Bowl 46, let’s take a look at some of the early lines.
The Patriots are a consistent 3 point favorite in most Vegas books and that number has held true offshore as well. There is one book that I know of, the MGM Mirage, which has the Pats as 2.5 point favorites so if you like the Pats that might be the best line you will get.
Stay tuned for a more detailed analysis of Super Bowl 46 in the coming days and good luck in your adventures on Sunday with the Pro Bowl!
