College Football - Week 9 Picks
Updated: April 2024

With league and conference play in full swing, week nine brings another week of interesting match ups. Will the weekend feature as many upsets as week eight? Here’s a look at Saturday’s best.

North Carolina @ #23 Pittsburgh
Pitt needed a last-second field goal to beat Syracuse last week and now faces a very good 6-1 North Carolina team that features QB Marquise Williams (1,353 passing yards, 9 TDs) and RB Elijah Hood (646 yards rushing). The Pitt defense is solid. The Panthers are 16th in the nation in total defense, but they have to face Tar Heels head coach Larry Fedora’s high-flying, up-tempo offense. Still, Pittsburgh is at home… Pittsburgh 27, North Carolina 20.

#19 Ole Miss @ Auburn
The Rebels regained some ground in the SEC West with a big win over Texas A&M last week. Auburn is just abysmal. Can the Tigers rebound with a win at home over a ranked opponent? Head coach Gus Malzahn needs some success or his Tigers may not win another SEC game. Auburn in an upset… Auburn 33, Ole Miss 30.

#3 Clemson @ NC State
It’s the perfect time for an upset and the Wolfpack has done it before. This time, though, Dabo Swinney’s Tigers are just too talented. Deshaun Watson is the most underrated quarterback in the country and Clemson’s running game gained 416 yards against Miami last week. NC State may challenge the Tigers for a while… Clemson 44, NC State 20.

Georgia @ #11 Florida
The world’s largest outdoor cocktail party, or whatever the politically correct term is these days, may turn into the SEC’s biggest beat down. The Gators are coming off a disappointing loss to LSU two weeks ago and are looking to take it out on rival Georgia. The Bulldogs are reeling after the loss of star RB Nick Chubb who recently underwent knee surgery. Georgia did beat Missouri albeit by a score of 9-6. In the end, Florida takes command of the SEC East… Florida 45, Georgia 14.

Tulane @ #16 Memphis
The Green Wave has faced three of the American Athletic Conference’s four best teams in the previous three weeks. Yes, they were all losses. A fourth straight defeat looms as Tulane travels to possibly the league’s best team in 16th-ranked Memphis. Tigers QB Paxton Lynch has thrown for over 300 yards in six straight games. Make it seven… Memphis 55, Tulane 20.

#15 Michigan @ Minnesota
The oldest trophy game in college football takes place Saturday as the Golden Gophers host Michigan. The Wolverines are coming off a bye following this season’s most miraculous finish, the botched punt and fumble return that gave Michigan State a 27-23 win. Minnesota enters the game 4-3 and desperately needs a win. Head coach Jerry Kill’s team faces top-ranked Ohio State and No. 10 Iowa in successive weeks. Could be a long stretch for the Gophers… Michigan 17, Minnesota 14.

#9 Notre Dame @ #21 Temple
The game of the day and a chance for a Group of Five team to make a statement will take place in Philadelphia where Matt Rhule’s Temple Owls get a chance at No. 9 Notre Dame. A victory would make a strong case for the Owls come College Football Playoff time should they go unbeaten and win the AAC championship game. The problem is that Notre Dame is just too talented. This one might not even be close… Notre Dame 44, Temple 28.

Texas @ Iowa State
The Longhorns aren’t back yet, but they are making a strong case to salvage the 2015 season. Texas beat Kansas State 23-9 and are now on a two-game winning streak. Iowa State had its share of turmoil this week with offensive coordinator Mark Mangino being fired and Joel Lanning replacing Sam Richardson at quarterback. Ultimately, it won’t matter as Texas moves closer to a bowl berth… Texas 27, Iowa State 23.

#8 Stanford @ Washington State
This one has upset written all over it. A night game at Washington State where head coach Mike Leach has quietly led the Cougars to their best start in a decade. Wazzu has beaten Oregon, Oregon State, and Arizona the past three weeks. Quarterback Luke Falk (2,885 passing yards, 26 touchdowns) will give the Stanford defense everything he’s got. Will it be enough? Stanford 45, Washington State 42.

Illinois @ Penn State
Somehow, the Nittany Lions just keep winning. They have struggled against teams like Buffalo and Army. Last week, they defeated a 2-5 Maryland team 31-30. Can they pull off the magic again? Illinois visits Happy Valley with a 4-3 record needing a win badly. Interim head coach Bill Cubit and the Illini were 4-1 until they ran into Iowa and Wisconsin. Penn State plays well at home… Penn State 13, Illinois 10.
