February, 2012 - Dallas Mavericks were a somewhat unexpected champions of last season’s NBA Finals. However, there is no doubting the fact that they were a very good team and continue to remain so this year also. But the bookmakers are not ready to choose them as the favorites for the coming season.

The main reason that they sight is that there might be some drop in the desire to be champions. And as history shows, teams have found it more difficult to defend titles than actually winning it for the first time. At 7/1, the odds for the Dallas Mavericks are at par with Los Angeles Lakers (7/1) and Oklahoma City Thunder (7/1).

The two teams who have gained better odds from the bookmakers are Miami Heat (2/1) and Chicago Bulls (6/1). Last season, Miami Heat lost the Finals to the Mavericks. The bookmakers believe that the Mavericks have a team that is capable of going all the way this year. They have a very strong unit with a lot of talent for all the positions.

Having lost the Finals last year would also ensure that they will be hungry for the title. Another great thing going for the team is that with the salary cap in place, they have an advantage over other teams in the fact that some of the brightest talents would be willing to compromise a bit on the pay package to have the option of playing for the potential champions.

The Chicago Bulls are also being seen as a strong contender and such perception is greatly based on their consistently strong performance over the last few years. Even during last year they had the best record during the regular season before they eventually lost out to Miami Heat in the Easter Conference. The Los Angeles Lakers will continue to be one of the favorites at 7/1, but there are a few factors that will be going against them. One of the biggest concerns is how the team will adapt to the new coaching staff.

There are also concerns about the average age of the team as some of the biggest stars are not getting any younger these years. But with one of the biggest fan base, Lakers will continue to be supported and closely followed. And a lot many people will also bet on them. And the odds from the bookmakers being largely a reflection of the public perception, Lakers will continue to be among the favorites.
