Not too Early to Think College Football Action

The college football season is still about two months away, but that hasn’t stopped the top NCAA sports prognosticators from chiming in with their predictions for the 2011 season. There have been a few teams switching conferences for the coming year and some past teams losing face in the wake of NCAA violations, but in many of the conferences previous winners are again raising to the top of the BCS possible list.

The shrinking Big 12, which now only has 10 teams following the departure of Nebraska and Colorado, has Oklahoma leading the potential conference challengers. Texas A&M and Texas are on equal footing to come in behind the Sooners who will be fielding 17 from last year’s squad. The return of Landry Jones at QB along with a strong defensive unit is expected to not only take the conference title, but many believe they will open the season as the number one ranked team.

In the Big-10, Jim Tressel will no longer be leading the Ohio State Buckeyes following his resignation after a scandal that still hasn’t ended for NCAA rules violations. Last year’s top team is showing up at number four in the 2011 initial rankings by most sportsbooks. Nebraska, the newest member of the Big-10 is expected to win the conference based on the return of 13 starters from last year when the Cornhuskers went 10-4.

Wisconsin, despite losing 11 players from last year is still expected to come in second with the Penn State’s Nittany Lions, with long-experienced Joe Paterno running third.
West Virginia and South Florida are on fairly even ground in the Big East Conference, although odds makers don’t see them as a threat for bowl contention. Nor do they see West Virginia, behind the returning arm of Geno Smith, fairing only slightly better than last year’s average season.

The PAC-12 added the Buffalos and Utah to the conference, with Utah anticipated to be one of the teams expected to be part of a three-way contest for the conference crown. Oregon is the early season favorite with returning QB Darron Thomas and running back LaMichael James, a Heisman Trophy candidate. Stanford is expected to make a strong showing with one more season from QB Andrew Luck, rounding out the top three teams likely to vie for the title.

In the South East Conference, which has a history of winning the national championship, predicting the conference champion is proving a little more difficult. Alabama and Florida are expected to battle it out with LSU to be part of the national title game The 2009 winner was the Crimson Tide and in 2006 and 2008 the Gators took the national crown. Last year’s winner Auburn is not showing up in the list of top five teams to win their conference in 2011.
