College Football - Week 13 Picks
Updated: April 2024

As the season gets closer to championship weekend, week 13 features a slew of games between ranked opponents. It could be another weekend of upsets. Here’s a look at some of the key games.

Texas Tech @ Texas
The Thanksgiving weekend football feast begins Thursday night with what used to be a decent rivalry game. It’s not Texas-Texas A&M, but it will do. The Longhorns need a win to keep their bowl eligibility alive. They will face Baylor on Dec. 5 to end the season. The problem is the Longhorns don’t generate much offense. The Red Raiders (6-5) are already bowl eligible and could improve their status with a victory over “big brother.” Head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s offense is second in the nation in scoring… Texas Tech 43, Texas 20.

South Florida @ Central Florida
Another Friday clash pits the Bulls, a team with a shot at an American Athletic Conference title, against the Black Knights, a team that has a shot, well, at finishing the season without a win. South Florida has won three in a row, including a 44-23 win over 22nd-ranked Temple. Should the Owls lose next week and the Bulls take care of 0-11 Central Florida, USF would win the AAC’s East Division… South Florida 55, Central Florida 14.

Navy @ Houston
The Cougars blew a shot at an unbeaten season with an upset loss to UConn last week. Now, they must beat Navy in order to play in the first-ever American Athletic Conference title game. Beating the Midshipmen may revolve around the status of QB Greg Ward. Ward, who has been sidelined by an ankle injury, played sparingly in last week’s loss. If he can go this week, the Cougars have a better chance. Still, head coach Tom Herman’s defense will have to contend with the nation’s second-ranked rushing offense (348.4 yards per game). QB Keenan Reynolds holds the NCAA record for career rushing touchdowns. Expect him to add to his total Saturday… Navy 38, Houston 35.

Oregon State @ Oregon
The annual Civil War takes place in Eugene and the Beavers face the mighty task of facing the nation’s hottest offense. The Ducks have been on fire that past three weeks. QB Vernon Adams was 20-for-25 for 407 yards and six TDs in last week’s win over USC. The Beavers won’t know what hit them… Oregon 63, Oregon State 34.

Baylor @ TCU
The Bears put it to Oklahoma State last week and have a chance to finish the season 11-1 with an outside shot at a CFP berth. TCU will be undermanned once again. Wide receiver Josh Doctson will miss Friday’s game. QB Trevone Boykin’s status is uncertain, but the Horned Frogs played well without either of them in last week’s 30-29 loss to Oklahoma. Who will start at QB for Baylor? It won’t matter… Baylor 49, TCU 42.

Ohio State @ Michigan
The Buckeyes lost a Big Ten regular season game for the first time in over three years last week. The Wolverines have won four in a row since the fluke that cost them a win over Michigan State. Head coach Jim Harbaugh’s team is 9-2 and would like nothing more than to close the season with a win over “Ohio.” The Buckeyes can still make a play for the conference title (if the Spartans lose to Penn State) and the College Football Playoff with a win. It will be tough to win in Ann Arbor… Ohio State 34, Michigan 28.

Alabama @ Auburn
It’s Iron Bowl time once again and anything can happen. Throw out the records. It’s one of college football’s most storied rivalries. This year, don’t expect much from Auburn. The Gus Malzahn offense hasn’t really clicked this season. The Tide has RB Derrick Henry, a possible Heisman Trophy winner, and a defense that is one of the nation’s finest… Alabama 27, Auburn 10.

Penn State @ Michigan State
A one-point loss to Nebraska is the only thing keeping the Spartans from a perfect season. Head coach Mark Dantonio’s squad beat Ohio State 17-14 last week and can close out a 12-1 regular season with a win over Penn State on Saturday. A win will also give them the Big Ten East title and a berth in the conference championship game. Penn State would like to not finish the season with three straight losses…but that is likely going to happen… Michigan State 44, Penn State 21.

UCLA @ USC
With a win, the Bruins would win the Pac-12 South and have a chance at winning the conference for the first time since 1998. UCLA has four wins over ranked opponents including last week’s 17-9 victory over No. 13 Utah. The Bruins have won the past three meetings, all by double digits. Make it four… UCLA 33, USC 21.

Ole Miss @ Mississippi State
If not for a crazy 53-52 upset loss to Arkansas, the Egg Bowl would have greater implications on the SEC West champion. Even so, the winner will be 9-3 and in a much better position come bowl selection time. Both teams have capable QBs – Ole Miss with Chad Kelly and the Bulldogs have Dak Prescott. The difference may come down to defense… Ole Miss 35, Mississippi State 34.

Notre Dame @ Stanford
A win here is the only shot that Notre Dame has at the College Football Playoff. An impressive win would be even better, but they are taking on a Stanford team that has clinched the Pac-12 North and is desperately clinging to a CFP berth. A win over the Irish coupled with a win in the conference championship game may be enough at this point to propel the Cardinal to the final four. At home, Stanford takes care of the first one… Stanford 27, Notre Dame 24.

Florida State @ Florida
The Gators have one of the nation’s best defenses. Head coach Jim McElwain’s defense is fourth in the nation in points against (14.5 per game), but the offense struggles. Florida needed overtime to beat Florida Atlantic last week. Florida State relies on RB Dalvin Cook. The Gators might slow him down, but their offense will fail them in this rivalry game… Florida State 28, Florida 17.

Oklahoma @ Oklahoma State
The Bedlam rivalry will go a long way to determining the Big 12 champion. Oklahoma hasn’t lost since its upset defeat to Texas. They squeaked by an undermanned TCU last week, but a win against the Cowboys may earn the Sooners a berth in the College Football Playoff. You gotta love the Big 12… Oklahoma State 48, Oklahoma 47.
