The real Dallas Cowboys may finally make more than a token appearance on Friday night when they host the Houston Texans. The Cowboys haven’t played their starters much in the first two preseason games and lost to San Diego and to Denver. The starters will get a lot more action on Friday and the Cowboys are favored to get their first preseason win of the year.
Dallas is expected to play quarterback Tony Romo, wide receiver Terrell Owens and the rest of the first strong offense at least the first half on Friday. The starting defense should get a similar amount of time. The Cowboys are more focused on this preseason game than on either of the first two. "We started working on things that we're going to work on and play in the ballgame that's coming up rather than things you're going to play throughout the year," head coach Wade Phillips said, "We were more specific about the things we wanted to do this ballgame rather than looking long-term."
Current Line/Odds: Cowboys - 5 , Total 41.5
The Texans have looked good this preseason winning both of their games against Denver and New Orleans. Quarterback Matt Schaub has been virtually flawless going 18-21 for 216 yards and two touchdowns. The Texans will be focused more on the running game on Friday than anything else. Starting running back Ahman Green is injured and could actually be released which means the starting job is up for grabs between Chris Brown, Marcel Shipp and rookie Steve Slaton. Star wide receiver Andre Johnson is questionable for this game.
Dallas and Houston have met every year in the since the Texans became a franchise in 2002, four times in the preseason and twice in the regular season. Each team has won all three of their home games in the series. The last time the two teams played at Texas Stadium in the preseason was in 2005 when the Cowboys won by a score of 21-9. Last year in Houston, the Texans got the 28-16 victory.

The New England Patriots have looked nothing like the team that went undefeated during the 2007 regular season so far this preseason. The Patriots have been without quarterback Tom Brady and he is questionable for this game on Friday. Normally the third game of the preseason is a dress rehearsal for the regular season but the Patriots may not treat the game as such. Philadelphia will be looking at the game as a big test though. Quarterback Donovan McNabb and the Eagles will look to play far better than they did last week against Carolina.
The Eagles will be without wide receiver Kevin Curtis on Friday. He will be out for quite a while after suffering a sports hernia. "We're trying to not wait and do that whole thing," head coach Andy Reid said. "We're trying to get on it. We've identified (the hernia) and it's the problem, and we're trying to get it taken care of." Wide receiver Reggie Brown will also not play on Friday and that means DeSean Jackson will start in Brown's spot Friday in New England, while Greg Lewis and Hank Baskett will rotate at Curtis' spot.
The Patriots will be looking for their regulars to play better on Friday even if Brady does not play. “We try to emphasize every opportunity we get to prepare for our regular season opener. So that is all of training camp practices and all four preseason games. I think they are all important and we try to maximize all of them. Each game gives the players the opportunity to fine-tune their skills, techniques, reactions and all that in preparation for the regular season.” Head coach Bill Belichick said, “This [game vs. Philadelphia] is a good one. It is a good opportunity against a good football team. The guys that get the chance to participate in the game, I'm sure they will be able to utilize that to help them prepare for the season. Not everybody will, but the guys that do, that will be good for them. The guys that don't, hopefully they will get it some other time or they have already gotten it.”

The defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants take on one of the AFC's rising powers in the Cleveland Browns in the second exhibition game of the 2008 season for both teams on Monday night in New Jersey.
ESPN will provide the live television coverage of this Monday Night Football game, beginning at 8 pm Eastern.
OddsMaker.com is listing the Giants as three-point home favorites, with a total of 35 ½.
Cleveland is trying to follow up a surprising 2007 season that saw them just miss the playoffs at 10-6 in their third year under coach Romeo Crennel. QB Derek Anderson emerged as a quality NFL QB, throwing for 3,800 yards and 29 touchdowns, as the Browns ranked eighth in total offense and tenth in rushing. But Cleveland ranked 30th in total defense and 27th vs. the run. Thus the Browns ranked 20th in the league in total yardage last year at -9 YPG.
Cleveland opened this preseason with a 24-20 loss to the New York Jets last Thursday as 4 1/2-point home favorites. The Browns outrushed the Jets 107-59, racked up 27 first downs compared to 11 for the Jets, and led 20-10 early in the fourth quarter. But the Browns defense gave up a 71-yard TD pass to New York's third-string QB, and two minutes later the Jets scored on a 62-yard punt return to take the lead.
The late flurry of scoring pushed the game over its total of 35.
Anderson played sparingly, but hit four of five pass attempts for 20 yards and a touchdown. After that, Brady Quinn completed 13-of-17 for 133 yards and an INT, while Ken Dorsey finished up by going 8-of-26 for 139 yards and two INTs.
The Giants opened their title defense with a 13-10 loss at Detroit last Thursday as three-point road underdogs. Eli Manning threw six passes, then watched David Carr and Anthony Wright go a combined 19-of-26 for 220 yards and a TD. But the G-Men lost the time-of-possession battle by a 34-to-26 margin, as Detroit ran the ball 35 times although for only 84 yards, helping the game stay under its total of 32.
New York ranked 16th in total offense last year, and fourth in rushing at 134 YPG. The Giants also ranked seventh in total defense and eighth vs. the run. Add it up, and NY ranked 11th in the league in total yardage last year at +26 YPG.
-These two teams last met in the preseason of 2005, when the Browns beat the Giants 17-14 in Cleveland.
-In their three preseasons under coach Crennel, the Browns are 8-4 straight up and 9-3 against the spread, with the totals going 4-8.
-In their four exhibition seasons under coach Tom Coughlin, the Giants are 9-7 both SU and ATS, with the totals going 7-9.
OddsMaker.com is also listing Cleveland at +150 on its NFL futures betting board to win the AFC North this season, +1,200 to win the AFC, and +2,500 to win Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa in February.
OddsMaker.com also lists the Giants at +300 to win the NFC East this season, +600 to win their second straight conference crown, and +1,500 to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

The Los Angeles Dodgers open a 10-game homestand tonight starting with a series against the National League East leading Philadelphia Phillies. The Dodgers had a good chance to take over first place in the National League West but lost two of three in San Francisco over the weekend. "It's disappointing but it's going to happen," said manager Joe Torre, "We're going to have to reach down and reach back. It's how you come back." The Dodgers are now 1.5 games behind Arizona in the NL West.
Current Line / Odds: Dodgers - 131 , Total 8 Under - 115
Los Angeles has won eight of their last 11 at home. They send Derek Lowe to the mound on Monday. He is 8-10 with a 4.10 ERA this season. His last start was terrible as he allowed eight runs and 13 hits in 3 1/3 innings against St. Louis. He has a 1.24 ERA in his last four outings at Dodger Stadium though and he is 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA in six starts and four relief appearances against the Phillies in his career.
The Phillies went 3-3 on their six game homestand including a 6-3 win on Sunday against Pittsburgh. Kyle Kendrick goes to the hill on Monday. He is 10-5 this season with a 4.37 ERA and he has a 1.45 ERA over his last three starts. He is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers.

July 29, 2008 NEW YORK - First he lost his job, and then he lost his wife, now he lost his freedom. Tim Donaghy, former NBA referee sentenced to 15 months in jail and 3 years of supervised release. After pleading guilty last year to taking thousands of dollars for inside betting tips to pay off his debt.
On June 2007, FBI contacted NBA to discuss alleged betting probe. Next month, Donaghy resigned from NBA Referee position as part of organized gambling system. The NBA calculated a figure up to 1.3 million dollars in back wages paid the former referee.
Also, two former classmates of shamed referee Tim Donaghy will spend more than a year in federal prison for their role in the NBA betting scandal that rocked the NBA. James Battista, a professional gambler, was sentenced to 15 months for making bets on NBA games based on Donaghy's inside tips. Thomas Martino, the mediator who spoke to Donaghy before games and delivered thousands of dollars when Donaghy's tips paid off, will serve a year in prison.
Judge last week set the compensation at $217,266, to be paid jointly by the three defendants, when NBA demanded nearly $1.4 million.

The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies begin a three-game series on Tuesday with both teams battling for the National League East lead. The Mets will be counting on Johan Santana on Tuesday while the Phillies will go with new acquisition, Joe Blanton.
Santana is 8-7 on the season with a 3.10 ERA. He has a nice ERA but really hasn’t pitched up to his reputation. He will be needed in a big way as the Mets hosts the Phillies on Tuesday. Santana is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA this season against the Phillies. Santana allowed five runs and six hits in only four innings in his last start against Cincinnati.
The Phillies go with Blanton who they picked up in a trade with Oakland. He is 5-12 this season with a 4.96 ERA. He is 1-0 against the Mets though, pitching 15 innings without allowing a run. "Maybe a change of scenery will help him," Philadelphia pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "We think he's going to be a piece that's going to help us get into the playoffs and further on." Blanton also did not pitch well in his last start, allowing six runs and nine hits in six innings against Seattle.

The New York Yankees are finally playing like a team that could make the playoffs. They send Nick Blackburn to the mound on Monday. He is 7-5 with a 3.65 ERA this season. First place in the National League West is on the line this weekend as the Arizona Diamondbacks host the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers begin the series just a game back. Los Angeles has not played well at Arizona recently, as they were swept there back in April. "The way they started, they manhandled us in the first series," Los Angeles manager Joe Torre said, "They were a very solid team. They pitched, they hit, they had speed and power; everything seemed to be firing. Considering how they started and how we struggled and look where we are. I'm happy to see we were able to stay in the race. We have to make sure our win streaks are longer than our losing streaks. You can't help but watch the scoreboard, but I don't really pay attention to them.
The Dodgers send Hiroki Kuroda to the mound on Friday. He is 5-6 with a 3.43 this season. He has been excellent of late going 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA in his three starts. He went 5 2/3 innings in April against Arizona, allowing four runs, two earned and nine hits in a 4-3 loss.
Arizona has not played well since April, going 27-40. "I think some of the first half has been less than what we expected," said Diamondbacks left fielder Eric Byrnes, “But I also think we've shown what we're capable of. It's a matter of going out and playing up to the standard that we expect." Arizona goes with Doug Davis on Friday. He is 3-4 with a 3.80 ERA this season. He held Los Angeles to two runs and six hits in six innings back in April.
The Diamondbacks are 6-14 in their last 20 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Diamondbacks are 1-4 in their last 5 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Diamondbacks are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. the National League West. The Diamondbacks are 19-6 in Davis' last 25 home starts.
The Under is 5-2 in the Dodgers last 7 road games vs. a left-handed starter. The Under is 7-1 in Kuroda’s last 8 road starts. The Under is 7-2 in Kuroda’s last 9 starts overall.
The Under is 4-0 in the Diamondbacks last 4 vs. the National League West.
The Over is 4-0 in the Diamondbacks last 4 overall. The Under is 4-1 in the Diamondbacks last 5 home games. The Under is 10-4-1 in the Diamondbacks last 15 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 4-0 in Davis' last 4 home starts. The Under is 4-1-1 in Davis' last 6 starts overall.

The 79th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be played at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night and should be a classic on and off the field. A total of 47 Hall of Fame players are expected to participate in pre-game ceremonies. It should be quite an event in New York.
The defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox had seven players selected to the game although David Ortiz will not play due to a wrist injury. The surprising selection was Boston catcher Jason Varitek but the players’ have a say in who makes the All-Star team and Varitek is a lot more popular than White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski who is more deserving.
With the All-Star game being played in New York, American League manager Terry Francona may choose to start Mariano Rivera. The Yankee closer would be a great choice since the starting pitchers in the All-Star game only go 2-3 innings anyway. Rivera has 23 saves this season and would be a very popular choice as the American League starting pitcher. He has not started a game since his rookie year.
On the other side of the field, National League manager Clint Hurdle is leaning toward starting Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs. Zambrano has the league’s third best ERA and is set up perfectly to start the game since he last pitched on Wednesday. "If he wants to start me for the All-Star Game, I would do it," Zambrano said. "It would be an honor for me." Zambrano pitched one inning in 2004 and was selected to the 2006 team but did not appear.
Francona and Hurdle are the two managers for the game because their teams won their respective leagues last season and met in the World Series. A late change to the National League lineup has Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday replacing injured Alfonso Soriano of the Cubs. Holliday was already on the roster but was not a starter. The two players added from the fan’s vote for the All-Star game were Corey Hart of the Brewers and Evan Longoria of the Rays.
MLB betting stats show that the American League has dominated the All-Star game recently. They are unbeaten in the last 10 games at 9-0-1 with the ridiculous tie in the 2002 game thrown in there. Four of the last six All-Star games have gone over the total as the teams combined to score 14 runs in 2002, 13 in 2003, 13 in 2004 and 12 in 2005. The 2006 game was a low-scoring 3-2 game while last season the American League won 5-4.

Major League Baseball July 11th - July 15th.
It’s the last weekend before the All-Star break and the action will be intense as teams try to go out on a high note.
The Oakland A’s have been one of the most overachieving and profitable teams in baseball this year. They sit in second place in the AL West and they host the first place L.A. Angels this weekend. In the NL, two division leaders square off when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the Philadelphia Phillies.
Don’t forget that Sportsbook.com is your All-Star betting headquarters. For starters, we’ll have odds for Monday’s Home Run Derby from Yankee Stadium. There could be a considerable advantage for left-handed hitters with the short porch from right field.
Tuesday’s All-Star Game is always a ratings bonanza and the National League will be looking for their first win since way back in 1996.

Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs -- Wednesday, 8:05 pm Eastern
The big news out of Chicago on Tuesday was the Cubs getting Rich Harden from the Oakland Athletics. He is expected to form a powerful one-two combination at the top of the Cubs pitching staff with Wednesday’s starter Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs sent pitcher Sean Gallagher, catcher Josh Donaldson, infielder Eric Patterson and outfielder Matt Murton to the A’s for Harden and pitcher Chad Gaudin.
Zambrano is still the ace of the Cubs staff and he gets the start on Wednesday against the Reds. Zambrano is 9-3 on the season with a 2.96 ERA. He threw six shutout innings in his last start against St. Louis. He is already 2-0 against the Red this year.
Cincinnati goes with Johnny Cueto on Wednesday. Cueto is 7-8 with a 4.63 ERA. He gave up three runs in seven innings against the Nationals in his last start.
