Valero Texas Open Preview

Category: Golf Betting, Golf News

The PGA Tour goes to Texas this week for the Valero Texas Open and five of the top ten finishers in the Masters are in the field.  The defending champion is Adam Scott and he is the favorite in golf odds at SBG Global.com.  Let’s take a look at the main contenders who could win in Texas this week.

Adam Scott nearly won the Masters last week and he is the defending champion so it is no surprise to see him the 7-1 favorite at SBG. He is 10th on the PGA Tour in driving and he leads the tour in birdies or better on par 5’s.  Right behind Scott in golf odds this week is Geoff Ogilvy at 9-1. Ogilvy tied for fourth last week at the Masters.  This will be his first time playing in this event. Another first-timer at the TPC in San Antonio will be Martin Laird.  He has played well all betting season, is seventh on the PGA Tour in all-around and he has finished 10th or better in three straight starts.  Laird is the only player in the field this week who is ranked in the Top 10 of the FedExCup standings.  Laird is the third choice in the betting at 13-1.

Ryan Palmer is a Texas native and he finished in a tie for 9th last season in this event and played well in the final round shooting a 64.  Palmer is listed at 18.5 to 1.  Following Palmer on the odds board are JB Holmes, Bo Van Pelt and Marc Leishman who are each 21-1.

Longshots seem to be winning every week on the PGA Tour. Let’s see if we can find a few to consider this week. Fredrik Jacobson finished second in this event a year ago and he tied for fifth in 2009.  He is 38-1 in the betting. Jimmy Walker is another longshot contender.  He finished tied for third last year in this event and he is sixth on the PGA Tour this season in adjusted scoring average. He has gotten some early action this week and his betting odds have already dropped to 23.5 to 1 at SBG.  Also at 23.5 to 1 is Anthony Kim. We’ll throw one more longshot in this week and look at J.J. Henry who is 38-1. He has been in the money in all 10 starts this year and has six Top 25 finishes. He is 13th on the PGA Tour this season in greens in regulation.

PGA Tour – Honda Classic Golf Tournament Latest Betting Odds, Location and Dates.

Category: Golf Betting, Golf News

Welcome to the Honda Classic Betting Preview

February 28th – March 6th, 2011
PGA National Resort & Spa’s Champion Course
Palm Beach Gardens, FL

The PGA Tour is in Florida this weekend for the Honda Classic where Camilo Villegas is the defending champion. It was founded in 1972 as the Jackie Gleason’s Inverrary Classic. In 1981, American Motors (AMC) backed the tournament. Since 1982, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) has been the title sponsor. It is a very strong field led by World #2 Lee Westwood and World #3 Luke Donald.  Europeans are dominating the World rankings and they also dominate this field.  Westwood is the 11-1 favorite at SBG Global with Donald the second choice at 13-1. The golf course is a par 70, with 7,241 yards in length, format will be stroke play for the prize pool of $5,600,000.

Here are the latest betting odds for the following golfers:

Lee Westwood         +1100
Luke Donald         +1300
Rory McIlroy         +1500
Graeme McDowell     +1500
Matt Kuchar         +1700
Vijay Singh         +2400

It used to be American players ruled the World golf rankings but not anymore. European players are now the ones to beat each week on the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods is a shell of his former self and hasn’t won in more than a year and Phil Mickelson is as inconsistent as ever. Matt Kuchar is probably the top American golfer right now. He will be playing this weekend and is 17-1 in golf odds. In addition to Westwood and Donald, other top European players like Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy are also playing in this event.

The course for the Honda Classic is the Champions Course in the Resort at PGA National and last year it was the second hardest on the PGA Tour.  Last year it was Villegas who played extremely well to win by five shots over Anthony Kim. Villegas is not playing as well this season and is a longshot at 50-1. Players that are preparing for the Masters in about a month really love to play the Honda Classic because the course is tough and challenging.  It gets them ready to play Augusta. That is one reason the field this week is simply superb. Forget about Woods and Mickelson not being here as they are not the best players in the world anyway.

Last week’s winner at the Match Play Championships was Luke Donald and he won the Honda Classic back in 2006. He holds the course record at PGA National and he could win again this week. He should definitely be favored over Lee Westwood.  Another player who should have lower odds than Westwood is Graeme McDowell who has played well in this tournament in the past.

If an American is going to win this golf betting week it could be Kuchar or it could be Rickie Fowler if he gets hot.  Fowler looked really good against Phil Mickelson in Match Play last week but couldn’t keep his strong play going. If he could just be consistent for four rounds he would win a lot of tournaments. Fowler is listed at 28-1 in golf odds at SBG Global.com.

138th Open Championship in Turnberry, Scotland this weekend betting odds.

Category: Golf News

TURNBERRY, Scotland — If Tiger Woods is to win the 138th Open Championship, he will have to do what he was unable to do at either of this year’s first two majors — rally. Check out the betting odds on Tiger Woods to win this weekend.

It was another TW from Stanford — five-time Open champion Tom Watson — who turned back the clock while shooting a 5-under-par 65. Ben Curtis and Kenichi Kuboya also shot 65. Miguel Jimenez leads the tournament with a 64.

Woods, meanwhile, was not even able to keep pace with the players in his group, shooting 1-over 71 while England’s Lee Westwood and Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa shot 2-under 68.

“I certainly made a few mistakes out there today,” said Woods, who has won three Open Championships and 14 major titles overall. “Realistically, I probably should have shot about 1 or 2 under par today. But I made a few mistakes, and consequently I’m at 1 over. … I hit a couple of shots to the right today, and three-ripped [putted] a hole from about 15 feet, and I didn’t take advantage of 17 [a par-5]. So there you have it.”

All of this came on a day that was relatively easy for scoring, at least by Open standards.

“She was defenseless today,” said Watson, who won the Open here in an epic showdown with Jack Nicklaus in 1977 and won the Senior British Open at Turnberry in 2003. “Obviously, the golf course played with no wind, and it was an easy test, if you have an easy test in an Open Championship.”

Woods made three birdies and four bogeys, saving his worst for last when he bogeyed the 15th and 16th holes and failed to birdie the par-5 17th.

For the day, he hit just 8 of 14 fairways, despite using mostly irons off tees. He did hit 12 of 18 greens and needed 30 putts.

And he has put himself in familiar position, at least as far as the majors are concerned. Woods was 5 strokes back after a first-round 70 at the Masters and 10 back after a 74 at the U.S. Open. At both tournaments, Woods finished tied for sixth, 4 strokes out of a playoff after having won in his previous start.

Woods came into the Open after a victory at the AT&T National, his third of the year.

“The misses I had were the same shots I was hitting on the range,” Woods said. “So I need to go work on that and get it squared away for tomorrow.”
