2010 NFL NFC East Division Preview

Our examination of the NFL’s Divisional odds continues with a look at the Odds to Win the NFC East. The NFC East has three legit contenders and another team with potential to make some noise. That’s why the NFL odds have the NFC East as co-favorites, along with the AFC South, to produce the 2011 Super Bowl winner.

At the top of the East, the Dallas Cowboys are the 5/4 favorites to win the division. They broke through last season by winning their first playoff game with Tony Romo under center and most sports pundits expect a deep run in the playoffs. The Eagles officially begin the Kevin Kolb era, although saying goodbye to Donovan McNabb was hard for some, but the Eagles will see McNabb twice in 2010 as he joined the division rival Washington Redskins.

To win the NFC East Division:

Dallas Cowboys:

+8125

Philadelphia Eagles:

+270

New York Giants:

Everyone expects big things from the ‘Boys this year and with 20 of 22 starters returning, there is no reason big things won’t happen this year in Big D. The addition of Dez Bryant gives Romo another scoring threat, the running back trio of Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice will provide a variety of looks from the backfield, and the linebacker crew is arguably the best in the NFL. If the Cowboys can avoid injuries and overcome a tough late-season schedule, the NFC East is theirs.

The Giants were 8-8 last season, but they way they played, they might as well have been 4-12. The defense was in the bottom five in the league and they couldn’t escape mediocrity all season. This year’s team is essentially the same group of players that won the Super Bowl in 2008. Last year they were decimated by injuries and if everyone returns healthy in 2010, the Giants should give the Cowboys a run for the NFC East title. With 11/4 odds, the Giants are a good candidate to win the East should the Cowboys falter.

Kevin Kolb is a solid quarterback and in his appearances last year, he performed well enough to make the Eagles cut ties with Donovan McNabb. He releases the ball quickly and fits well into Andy Reid’s offense very well. The receiving core is underrated, as DeShaun Jackson gets the press but tight end Brent Calek will have a nice season, so fantasy football fans take note. Jeremy Maclin should improve in his second year. This year will be a down year for the Eagles, and the sad loss of defensive coordinator Jimmy Johnson will hurt the defense. While Kolb and the receivers will show flashes of potential, it won’t be enough to be relevant in the East.

The Redskins round out the division with 11/2 odds to win the NFC East. Washington has put together a 2005 all-star team but questions remain how much, McNabb, Willie Parker, Larry Johnson and Joey Galloway have left to give and if it’s enough to challenge the Cowboys or the Giants for the NFC East Title. It doesn’t look good but with so many names, but it will be worth watching good or bad.
