1. New York Mets - The signing of Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins could be the difference maker in the NL East…in fact in the entire MLB. Lets begin with the starting rotation. With, what could be the best 1-2 punch in the majors, Santana and Pedro Martinez and John Mayne coming back and expected to be better than ever, the Mets have, what I believe to be, the best starting rotation in baseball.
As for the bullpen, Aaron Heilman and Pedro Feliciano had ERA’s in the low 3’s last year and of course they have the, oh so dependable Billy Wagner to close out the game. We all know that hitting has not been a problem for NY for the past several years. From the leadoff batter down to the bottom of the line-up, the Mets are strong.
The only gap in their line-up that they need to fill is Paul Lo Duca. Brian Schneider, acquired from Washington, has some big shoes to fill, and with last years stats, .235 BA and only 6 HR’s in 129 games, he’s going to have to step it up a bit. |
2. Atlanta Braves – The Braves made some big moves this off season, although they suffered a huge loss in Andruw Jones. Atlanta, like the Mets, have an incredible starting staff. Between Smoltz, Hudson, the acquisition of Glavine from the Mets, Chuck James and Mike Hampton, this rotation could be trouble for the rest of the league.
Their line-up is stacked as well. With Chipper Jones, Mark Teixiera and Jeff Francouer as the heart of the line-up and the new center fielder, Mark Kotsay, the braves should be a high scoring team this year. |
3. Philadelphia Phillies – Phily has a strong rotation as well, but no superstars that shine. They do though have a strong line-up from top to bottom. With the addition of Geoff Jenkins from Milwaukee, combined with Rollins, Utley and Howard is pretty potent. If everyone could stay healthy, they could make a run at the Wild Card, but that’s about it.
4. Florida Marlins – They received some talented prospects in the Willis trade, but not enough to fight for the division. They will be good in the future, but are too young to make a playoff run this year. They lost their 2 best players, Willis and Cabrera, to the Detroit Tigers. The rotation has some improving and developing to do, but I don’t think they’ll end up in the NL East basement.
5. Washington Nationals – Washington has a pathetic starting rotation. 4 of the 5 starters had losing or even records last season except for Clippard, who had a 6.33 ERA instead. Of course, adding Lo Duca to the line-up is a huge improvement. It’s going to be a fight all season to see who stays out of last place, Florida or Washington.
