The Voting

The balloting for the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Game began on April 22, 2009 and the voting ended at midnight on July 2. The maximum number of votes that could be cast from one email address was 25, though there was no limit to the number of votes that can be cast on normal ballots directly at the stadium. At the end of this huge exercise a total of 223.5 million votes were cast and 17.8 million ballots were submitted. The final rosters were officially announced on July 5.

Cardinals’ Albert Pujlos have managed to get the maximum number of votes both on the online and on the overall count. He has had a tremendous season and the votes have done justice to his current form. It also helped that he was one of the hometown guys. This year will be his sixth appearance in an All-Star Game for the National League, a pretty impressive record.

The Betting

The 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be played to determine who will have the home field advantage for the World Series. It must be understood that home filed advantage is critical for baseball as every ground has different dimensions and often teams are built on the basis of the home ground. This is the seventh year when the game will determine the home field advantage. During the previous six occasions the American League has won all the games.

If we look at the overall tally of the 79 previous games the National League have the numbers in their favor by 40–37–2. So it might seem that the odds are in their favor. But recent form suggests that the American League has the upper hand who have not lost since 1996 and have won 11 of the last 12 encounters. Even if we go back further, the American League has emerged victorious in 17 out of the last 21 games played.  Based on the recent history it will be hard to predict a win for the National League. But being an All-Star Game, both teams have a tremendous line up and on the day any team can win.

So if you are betting it might make sense to go for the American League as most of the predictions point to their victory. Even history suggests so. But betting for the favorite will also mean that you make less on your money if they win.  You can also try the spreads – who will hit the most home runs, how many runs will be scored in all, who will be the most successful pitcher, etc. The opportunities are endless. So start doing your research and add more spice to the game by betting on your favorites.
